Marketing Tips for Solo and Small-Firm Practitioners

  1. Join your local chamber of commerce.  It’s great for networking and community credibility.

  1. Brainstorm ideas with your office staff.  Those are the types of people who may be your prototypical clients.

  1. Send out press releases.

  1. Join local sports leagues like softball, basketball, or dodgeball.  Make sure everyone knows you are a lawyer.  If you can make sure that you are the only lawyer on the team, that is even better.

  1. Get a unique business card and hand it our freely.

  1. Offer to write an article for your local newspaper on a broad general topic.  Make sure the byline includes the name of your firm and your email address.

  1. Add a signature block to your outgoing email with your office address and contact information.  It makes your emails look more professional.

  1. Try to get a local reporter to use you as a legal expert.  Offer to comment on a court case or to translate legalese into layman English.

  1. Apply to teach a course at a local community college, YMCA, or place of worship.  This will also help improve your public speaking skills.

  1. Volunteer to speak to your local high school about law-related topics.  Both the students and the teachers may eventually be clients one day.
